The Politics of Spite [Oct. 5th, 2009|11:11 am]

There was what President Obama likes to call a teachable moment last week, when the International Olympic Committee rejected Chicago’s bid to be host of the 2016 Summer Games.

“Cheers erupted” at the headquarters of the conservative Weekly Standard, according to a blog post by a member of the magazine’s staff, with the headline “Obama loses! Obama loses!” Rush Limbaugh declared himself “gleeful.” “World Rejects Obama,” gloated the Drudge Report. And so on.

So what did we learn from this moment? For one thing, we learned that the modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional maturity of a bratty 13-year-old.

Scalia on Lawyers [Oct. 1st, 2009|05:20 pm]

I mean there’d be a, you know, a defense or public defender from Podunk, you know, and this woman is really brilliant, you know. Why isn’t she out inventing the automobile or, you know, doing something productive for this society?

I mean lawyers, after all, don’t produce anything. They enable other people to produce and to go on with their lives efficiently and in an atmosphere of freedom. That’s important, but it doesn’t put food on the table and there have to be other people who are doing that. And I worry that we are devoting too many of our very best minds to this enterprise.

This is for all the people who have suggested I go on to law school.

I wish more textbook examples were so colorful. [Sep. 5th, 2009|02:08 pm]
We need to be careful to distinguish between rationality and omniscience. An omniscient agent knows the actual outcome of its actions and can act accordingly; but omniscience is impossible in reality. Consider the following example: I am walking along the Champs-Elysées one day and I see an old friend across the street. There is no traffic nearby and I'm not otherwise engaged, so, being rational, I start to cross the street. Meanwhile, at 33,000 feet, a cargo door falls off a passing airliner, and before I make it to the other side of the street I am flattened. Was I irrational to cross the street? It is unlikely my obituary would read "Idiot attempts to cross street."

As if the example wasn't already sadistic enough, the footnotes go on to reference a 1989 Washington Post article about how nine passengers flew to their death when a cargo door blew open and flew away on the way to New Zealand.

See N. Henderson, “New door latches urged for Boeing 747 jumbo jets,” Washington Post, 8/24/89.

I wish more textbooks could keep me so entertained.

Not bad for my first time. [Aug. 4th, 2009|05:14 pm]

This morning, before work, I went out with a co-worker of mine to a local shooting range. I've been meaning to make my way out to one for ages. I thank T-Rez for the opportunity to finally do so, it was really an awesome experience.

The indoor gun range was empty, so I was able to talk to him about the finer points of gun safety and proper technique. Shooting really is a science, one that I hope to continue improving upon in the future.

The two guns I used were both Glock 23 pistols, one with a modified barrel to shoot .22 LR cartridges, and another that shot the typical .40 S&Ws. Turns out I did pretty well for myself for my first time.

A Vicious Cycle [Aug. 3rd, 2009|10:59 am]
Why do we do this? Because everyone uses Word, so we have to. And why does everyone use Word? Because everyone uses Word. It starts to make sense if you just hit your head on the wall enough times.

Consolidation [Jul. 19th, 2009|03:11 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Location |Waltham, MA]

It's about time that I gave my LiveJournal some attention as opposed to posting elsewhere online. I just changed the way the front page looks and changed some of my syndication settings so that there isn't an entry for every Twitter message I put online, but instead a single entry that is sent once a day. I have to thank the argument I had with [info]xololovepuppy on Facebook for that; I can see how excessive updates on a medium that wasn't made for it could become annoying.

In all honesty though, I'll probably go back to just using my LiveJournal as my primary way to blog, while keeping around Twitter for random status messages and Posterous for my sharing of media and quotes. All of the stuff I post on these will still be posted here, just not at a constant rate like before.

For so long, I felt that I can totally control everything I shared online by only posting on a blog that I hosted myself while discussion and the like could rest totally tangential to it on other services. Honestly though, it just complicates things. I don't want to access several different services to have discussion with those I care about online, I just want to go on two or three different sites at most (LJ, Facebook, and Twitter respectively).

I suppose this behavior will lead me to change how my regular website looks. It should really just be a collection of links to my activity online and personal projects as they come up as a result.

I hate being so meta (posting on my blog about my blog, blegh) but the point is, barring any sweeping changes to the service, I'm back on LJ for good.

Most of you probably won't even notice what's changed, or even care, but I just wanted to let that out.

ADDENDUM: Eh, screw it. The medium's part of the message, I see little point in syndicating my Twitter feeds on here. Just go on the page if you wish to see them. Each site I'm on is an island, and I might as well keep it that way. Hooray for sane entries once more.

Requiem For A Trusted Voice Of Reason [Jul. 18th, 2009|02:34 pm]
Today, so much of the media doesn't try to reach a mass audience, with all its unpredictable diversity and variations. They look for like-minded people who want a view of the news that will reassure them that they're right — that "that's the way it is." But in the welter of news sources, whom will they trust to tell them when it's not?

Not to be mistaken for the disappointment of an RPG from Mistwalker.
This is probably one of the most infectious songs I've come across in
recent memory. It's far too catchy.

NOTE: If you received this post several times, I apologize. Between
Posterous being unusually slow and imeem being lame (30 seconds for an
embedded song? Screw you guys.) this ended up being posted far too
many times.
